The autumn of major NHL contract extensions looks poised to continue on.

The Dallas Stars have signed defenseman Thomas Harley to an eight-year contract with an annual average value of $10.587 million.

Harley, a 24-year-old left-handed blue liner, was the team’s first-round pick at No. 18 overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. In his NHL career, he’s appeared in 206 regular season games while compiling 111 points and skating to a plus-58 rating.

A solid all-around defender with offensive upside, size and solid skating ability, Harley projects as a surefire top-pairing option for the next decade or so. His development has also made him a key figure in the long-term vision for Hockey Canada’s defense.

Harley was an injury replacement for Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off this past February, and he was called into action when Shea Theodore got hurt, recording an assist while playing in two games.

Stars general manager Jim Nill has been hard at work at getting the young, talented members of his core signed to long-term deals. Last trade deadline, he successfully completed a sign-and-trade to add Mikko Rantanen to the fold for the long haul. The very next day, he got young forward Wyatt Johnston signed to a five-year extension at an $8.4 million price tag.

Roope Hintz, Esa Lindell and Miro Heiskanen are all also contractually tied to the team for the next several years. Dallas has become a mainstay in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in recent years, and has lost in the Western Conference Final in each of the past three seasons.

The Stars own a 5-3-1 record to start this season, and they’ve won their past two games to shake off a sluggish start and get back above .500. Harley has a goal and seven assists for eight points in nine games to get the year started.
