Red Wings’ Patrick Kane to miss game Sunday against Oilers

Showtime is temporarily cancelled in Detroit.
Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan confirmed Saturday that veteran winger Patrick Kane will miss Sunday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.

— Max Bultman (@m_bultman) October 18, 2025The news comes after Kane crashed hard into the boards late in Detroit’s 2-1 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Lightning Friday.
In Kane’s absence, look for Jonatan Berggren to fill in on Detroit’s second line alongside Marco Kasper and Alex DeBrincat.
The former Chicago Blackhawk is off to a solid start to the season for the Red Wings, notching two goals and three assists for five points in just five games played. Kane is in his third consective season in Detroit, where he’s still been an effective offensive threat, if not entirely the electrifying player he was in his heyday. Last season, Kane finished with 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points in 72 games played.
Detroit re-signed Kane this past offseason to a one-year, $3 million deal, hoping he could be the veteran presence this young Red Wings team needs to bring the franchise back to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Of course, Kane has plenty of playoff experience, as he has three Stanley Cup championships under his belt from his days in Chicago, along with the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2013. The Buffalo native is chasing some individuals accolades, as well. He currently has 1,348 career points, which puts him 43 points behind Brett Hull as the highest scoring American NHL player of all time. He’s also 50 assists behind Phil Housley as the American NHLer with the most assists of all time.
After hosting the Oilers on Sunday, the Red Wings will go on the road for back to back games against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday and the New York Islanders on Thursday.
