With a hot start to the 2023-24 regular season, the Detroit Red Wings were starting to show some semblance of the franchise that earned the nickname “Hockeytown.” After a 6-3-1 record in the month of October, the Red Wings faced some adversity to start November, sealed with two losses against the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs in Sweden during the NHL’s Global Series.

Once they returned to North America, it was smooth sailing for the Red Wings, winning six of seven games, capped off by the news that future Hall of Fame winger Patrick Kane was joining the lineup.

But the team has struggled with the addition of Kane, only winning once in the seven games he’s played. What hurts even more are Detroit’s setbacks in goal, with Alex Lyon leaving last Saturday’s matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers with an oblique injury, and Ville Husso leaving Monday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks with a lower-body injury.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Red Wings’ goaltending struggles and

Tyler Yaremchuk: The Red Wings have suffered a couple of significant injuries with Lyon and Husso out. Frank, you’ve said a hundred times that this is a three-goalie league, and this is a perfect example of why you don’t just trade James Reimer for a sixth-round pick when a team calls.

Frank Seravalli: James Reimer out here kicking a .911 save percentage this season, and he’s only had one season in his career where he had one below .900, and that was last year. The Red Wings signed Reimer to a one-year deal after not really knowing what to expect from Husso, but it was Lyon who ran with the ball the last few weeks.

Now Lyon is hurt, Husso is hurt, so this is exactly why you have to carry three goalies, even if it’s uncomfortable at times.
