Some injury troubles between the pipes in Hockeytown.

When speaking to the media on Thursday, Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan revealed that goaltender Cam Talbot “tweaked something” and is considered day-to-day.

McLellan did note that the Red Wings are going to have to call up a goaltender from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, to back up John Gibson for the team’s matchup on Friday night against the Buffalo Sabres.

It wasn’t revealed how exactly Talbot was hurt. Given the fact he hasn’t played since March 8, the 38-year-old must’ve suffered some sort of ailment during practice.

Talbot has certainly fallen back to second fiddle this season with Detroit, as Gibson has grabbed the reins as the No. 1 netminder, doing his part in keeping the team in the running for a playoff spot. Talbot has appeared in 28 of the Wings’ 28 games this year, posting a record of 12-8-5, with a 3.03 goals-against average and a .891 save percentage.

Expect the Red Wings to recall goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa. He was called up after Gibson was hurt earlier this month, but didn’t see any action. The Hamilton, Ont. native was part of the Griffins’ historic start earlier this season, as the team battles for the best record in the AHL. However, Cossa has struggled over the past month. He has given up at least three goals in six of the past seven starts, including allowing four goals in his past three games.

Coincidentally, Cossa’s lone NHL appearance came last season in Buffalo, where he picked up a shootout win in relief on Dec. 9, 2024.

Gibson has started the last nine games for the Red Wings. It has been a bumpy stretch for the 32-year-old, going 3-5-1 over that span, allowing three or more goals five times.

The Red Wings (38-25-8) are sixth in the Atlantic Division, one point back of a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
