It looks like this summer will feature a homecoming for Andrew Copp.

Copp, who was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and who played NCAA hockey for the University of Michigan, is expected to ink a multi-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings when free agency opens up.

Back to hockey. Unless something shifts, all indications suggest Andrew Copp will sign with the Detroit Red Wings. Good player who will likely command $5 mil + on a 4-6 year term. We’ll soon find out.

The Winnipeg Jets selected Copp with the No. 104 overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. Copp broke into the NHL as a bottom-six checking forward for the Jets in 2015-16, scoring 13 points over the course of 77 games.

The COVID-19-shortened 2021 season represented a breakout for Copp, as he scored 15 goals and 39 points across 55 games. Copp again set career-highs in 2021-22 thanks in part to an excellent performance after being traded to the New York Rangers ahead of the trade deadline. Copp scored 18 points in 16 games with the Rangers and 53 points in 72 games all told.

Copp, who just turned 28 years old, figures to be a veteran, two-way center for the Red Wings who can play behind captain Dylan Larkin. Copp also offers versatility, as he played as a center and as a winger while with the Jets.

Free agency is set to open at noon ET on Wednesday.
