Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde said Tuesday that forward Filip Zadina would not play tonight versus Pittsburgh Penguins. According to reports, he could be done for the season.

The 23-year-old has struggled this season, putting up seven points (three goals, four assists) in 30 games, his lowest totals since 2018-19. Zadina suffered a leg injury in November after blocking a shot in a game against the New York Islanders, keeping him out of the lineup month to month.

Zadina signed a three-year, $5,475,000 extension with the Wings last summer; his contract has a cap hit of $1,825,000. He was selected sixth overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, and his most productive season came during the 2021-22 campaign, notching 10 goals and 24 points in 74 games. He has totalled 68 points (28 goals, 40 assists) in 190 career games with the Wings.

Additionally, forward Alex Chiasson will also be unavailable for tonight’s game against the Penguins. The Montreal, Quebec product has five goals and seven points in 11 games this season with the Wings. He has totalled 20 points in 29 games with the Wings’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Wings also announced that they had recalled forward Taro Hirose from the Griffins under emergency conditions. The 26-year-old has notched a team-leading 54 points (15 goals, 39 assists) in 64 games this season. Hirose was signed out of the NCAA following three illustrious seasons with Michigan State Univ, where he was a Hobey Baker finalist. He made his NHL debut in the 2018-19 season and scored his first NHL goal on Mar. 31st against the Boston Bruins. He has recorded 20 points in 57 NHL games. Hirose has a cap hit of $850,000.
