Detroit Red Wings goalie Thomas Greiss named first star of the week


Detroit Red Wings goalie Thomas Greiss has been named the NHL’s first star of the week.
Greiss stopped 66 shots in 130 minutes of regulation and overtime in two games last week, as well as an additional six shootout saves, as the Red Wings posted a 1-0-1 record. He stopped 33 shots and one of three shootout attempts in a 1-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on April 27.
On May 1, he shutout the Tampa Bay Lightning making five shootout stops in the win.
Second start of the week went to Connor McDavid who scored four goals and 10 points in four games last week for the Oilers as the team won three of four games. He opened the week with two games against the Jets scoring three goals and one assist in a 6-1 win April 26, and three assists in a 3-1 win April 28th, both against Winnipeg.
While he was held off the scoresheet in a 3-1 loss to the Flames on April 29, he came back two days later with a goal and two assists.
Third star of the week was New York Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov, who posted 53 stops in a pair of wins against the New York Rangers. He made 25 saves in a 4-0 win on April 29 followed by a 28 stop performance two days later.
