Detroit Red Wings’ Patrick Kane exits game vs. Maple Leafs with lower-body injury

Detroit Red Wings veteran Patrick Kane left Sunday night’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs with a lower-body injury.

Kane left the game after an awkward tie-up and fall with Maple Leafs’ forward Pontus Holmberg in front of the Red Wings net. The Red Wings confirmed via X that the American forward would not return to the game upon further evaluation.

Kane has seven goals, nine assists and 16 points in 18 games this season while playing on the Red Wings second line with J.T. Compher and Alex DeBrincat. Kane signed a one-year contract worth $2.75 million with Detroit at the end of November.

The 35-year-old had 12 points in 19 games with the New York Rangers after getting dealt before last season’s trade deadline and had one goal and six points in seven Stanley Cup Playoff contests.

Drafted No.1 overall in 2007, Kane quickly became one of the best players in USA hockey history. He led the Blackhawks to Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015. He won the Calder Trophy in 2008 and took home the Hart Trophy as league MVP in 2015-16. Kane also captured a silver medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver with USA.

To date, Kane has 458 goals and 1,253 points in 17 seasons with the Blackhawks, Rangers and Red Wings. The Buffalo, New York product is only 138 points behind Brett Hull’s 1,391 career points for the most by an American player.

Detroit currently sits fifth in the Atlantic Division with a 21-16-5 record and .560 points percentage through 42 games. They sit two points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning and just three points behind Toronto.

Following tonight’s game against the Maple Leafs, the Red Wings are slated to face off against the Florida Panthers on Wednesday. The Red Wings should have an update on Kane’s status in the coming days.
