Detroit Red Wings re-sign forward Christian Fischer to one-year contract

The Detroit Red Wings have agreed to terms on a new one-year contract with forward Christian Fischer, the club announced Monday afternoon.

Fischer, 27, appeared in 79 games with the Red Wings during the 2023-24 regular season, collecting five goals and 19 points. According to the club release, his new contract carries a $1.125 million cap hit for the 2024-25 season.

The Red Wings previously signed Fischer to an identical one-year, $1.125 million contract for the 2023-24 season after the Arizona Coyotes declined to tender the Chicago, Illinois product a qualifying offer as a pending restricted free agent.

The Coyotes originally selected Fischer in the second round (No. 32 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. After spending his first post-draft season with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires, Fischer made his NHL debut with the Coyotes in the 2016-17 season.

Fischer spent parts of seven seasons with the Coyotes to begin his NHL career, establishing himself as a fan favorite in the desert and eventually being named an alternate captain. He topped out with 15 goals and 33 points in 79 games with the Coyotes in the 2017-18 season.

Through 477 career games over eight NHL seasons with the Coyotes and Red Wings, Fischer has collected 61 goals and 130 points. He added one assist in nine playoff games with Arizona in 2020.

The Red Wings have been active in the free agency market over the last 24 hours, agreeing to terms on a new one-year deal with forward Patrick Kane and signing defensemen Erik Gustafsson and William Lagesson. The Wings also signed goaltenders Cam Talbot and Jack Campbell to contracts.

After making the playoffs 25 years in a row, the Red Wings have not returned to the postseason since 2016, marking the second-longest active playoff drought in the National Hockey League.
