Red Wings’ Horcoff says there’s ‘zero interest’ in trading Edvinsson

While Simon Edvinsson is back on this side of the globe, concerns remain about his future with the Detroit Red Wings.
Yet the front office in Hockeytown plans to keep the big Swedish blueliner around.
When speaking to reporters on Wednesday, interim general manager Shawn Horcoff stated that he doesn’t plan on trading Edvinsson, further implying that the team wants Edvinsson in a Red Wing uniform.
“I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson,” Horcoff said. “Not something I’m entertaining. We want to sign him.”
The drama around Detroit has been snowballing since the team bowed out of Stanley Cup Playoff contention late last season, missing the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season. It all started when captain Dylan Larkin requested a trade, which eventually led to Steve Yzerman stepping down as GM. Then, as training camp neared, it became clear that Edvinsson, a restricted free agent, wouldn’t sign a new contract until the team’s GM situation was figured out.
However, after camp ended, Edvinsson still had no deal, leading the 23-year-old to return to Sweden. Then, as the 2026-27 regular season began, it emerged that he preferred to be traded from the Red Wings, sparking even more uproar among fans and the media.
The question is, what do the Wings do from here? Clearly, the team has great belief in Edvinsson and what he can bring to the team in the future. He was reportedly the piece the Vancouver Canucks wanted in return for Quinn Hughes, which Yzerman apparently wasn’t on board with. Yet, the fact that the Red Wings haven’t been able to come to terms with the player on a new contract raises questions about how much they value the young rearguard.
Without Edvinsson, it has been a bumpy start for the Wings, as they have won just one of their first six contests, going 1-3-2 thus far. Detroit is back in action on Thursday night, hosting the also-struggling Philadelphia Flyers.
