The Detroit Red Wings brought in an extra forward on Friday, signing NHL veteran Alex Chiasson to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

Chiasson was playing for the Wings’ AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, on an AHL contract. The 32-year-old winger recorded 9 goals and 20 points in 29 games with the Griffins.

Chiasson will provide the Red Wings with forward depth after their decision to trade Tyler Bertuzzi to the Boston Bruins earlier in the week. It seemed as though Detroit would find a Bertuzzi replacement in the form of Flyers’ veteran James van Riemsdyk, but the teams could not come to an agreement before the 3 pm trade deadline.

The Red Wings are the 7th NHL stop for Chiasson, who played 67 times for the Vancouver Canucks in 2021-2022. The forward has 114 goals and 224 points in over 600 NHL games.

Despite going on a furious hot streak after the all-star break, Detroit has effectively been eliminated from playoff contention by its current 4-game skid.

GM Steve Yzerman continued a busy week by signing Chiasson from the Griffins.  Along with trading Bertuzzi and defenseman Filip Hronek, the Red Wings legend signed captain Dylan Larkin to a healthy extension.

The Red Wings will return to action in an away game against the New York Islanders tomorrow at 12:30 pm ET.
