The Detroit Red Wings have made another play in free agency, signing winger Dominik Kubalik to a two year contract with a $2.5 million cap hit.

Kubalik is coming off a two year deal with a $3.7 million cap hit, a contract he had signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. Originally an RFA, the Blackhawks chose not to qualify him, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Kubalik is coming off his weakest season since joining the NHL in 2019. He had just 15 goals, 17 assists, and 32 points in 78 games for the Blackhawks this season, totals that were lower than his previous season that was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, he was a Calder trophy nominee in 2020, where he scored 30 goals for Chicago, so there’s still potential there.

Kubalik joins a long list of acquisitions for the Red Wings so far today, as they’ve brought in Andrew Copp, Ben Chiarot, and Olli Maatta as well today. They also made a deal to bring in goalie Ville Husso, who they immediately signed to an extension as well.
