The Detroit Red Wings have signed ECHL goaltender John Lethemon to a one-year contract.

The deal holds an AAV of $750,000 and will run until the end of the 2022-23 season. Lethemon, a 6-foot-3 goaltender, has never signed an NHL contract previously.

Lethemon has been one of the best goaltenders in the ECHL with a 16-1-3 record through 24 games. He has four shutouts, all coming in his past eight starts while rotating with top prospect Sebastian Cossa on a nightly basis.

Lethemon previously served as starter for Michigan State University from 2016-20 before joining the ECHL’s Greenville Swamp Rabbits for 2020-21. He spent two years there before making the trek to Toledo, and also went 2-0 in his only two AHL games with Ontario.

The 26-year-old becomes the sixth goalie under contract with the Red Wings, joining Ville Husso, Magnus Hellberg, Alex Nedeljkovic, Victor Brattstrom and Cossa. While it’s unlikely he’ll play in the NHL anytime soon, his presence gives the Red Wings some extra depth down the stretch, something many teams have addressed in recent days.
