Berggren was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1st after the conclusion of his one-year, $825,000 contract, and he did have arbitration rights as a free agent for the first time. The two parties avoid that by reaching a deal, rewarding Berggren with a bit more money after his first full-time NHL season while also giving the Red Wings the opportunity to see the 24-year-old develop further before committing to him.
There are no reported signing bonuses, performance bonuses, no-trade clauses or no-move clauses with the deal.
Berggren receives a raise of exactly $1 million with the new deal, and gets his first seven-digit pay cheque in his career. He’ll take up 1.91% of the salary cap next season, and will still be an RFA with arbitration rights at the conclusion of it next summer.
Berggren is coming off of his first full season at the NHL level, which saw him play 75 games and manage to get 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points in that span. While it’s not his most productive season, having gotten 15 goals and 28 points in 67 games, it was his first season that didn’t see him play a game in the AHL.
The Red Wings have kept busy over the weekend, as along with re-signing Berggren, they’ve also retained Albert Johansson and William Lagesson for the 2025-26 season. On top of that, they also revamped their goaltending by acquiring John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks, and dumped some salary by trading Vladimir Tarasenko to the Minnesota Wild.
Detroit currently have nine unrestricted free agents and four restricted free agents remaining, highlighted by Patrick Kane and Alex Lyon, with over $20 million in cap space to re-sign them and make any other additions.
