Red Wings re-sign William Lagesson to two-year contract extension

The Detroit Red Wings announced Friday they had agreed to terms with defenseman William Lagesson on a two-year contract extension with an annual average value (AAV) of $775,000 that will keep him with the team through the 2026-27 season.

The 29-year-old Lagesson spent the 2024-25 season with the Red Wings and their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. In seven regular-season games, Lagesson had one assist and four penalty minutes, while in 23 AHL regular-season games, he recorded three goals and six assists for nine points and 18 penalty minutes.
In five NHL seasons, Lagesson, a native of Gothenburg, Sweden, has 12 assists and 58 penalty minutes in 107 career regular-season games with the Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers.
Meanwhile, in seven AHL seasons, Lagesson has 24 goals and 57 assists for 81 points and 136 penalty minutes in 196 career regular-season games with the Griffins, Toronto Marlies, Chicago Wolves and Bakersfield Condors.
His most productive professional season came in 2022-23 with the Wolves, where he scored 10 goals and 22 assists for 32 points in 65 regular-season games.
Lagesson was drafted out of Sweden by the Oilers in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He would move to North America and spend one season in the USHL with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, scoring two goals and 14 assists for 16 points.
He would spend the next two seasons playing in the NCAA with UMass-Amherst, where he would score four goals and 11 assists for 15 points and 64 penalty minutes in 63 career games.
Internationally, Lagesson would represent Sweden twice at the World Junior Championships in 2015 and 2016, finishing fourth place both times. He also dressed for the World Under-17 Championship, helping them win a gold medal.
