Devils’ Jack Hughes, Paul Cotter received write-in votes in 2024 U.S. Presidential election

There are many ways for a diehard NHL fan to show love for their favorite team, but some people in New Jersey took it to the extreme this week.

Americans headed to the polls to cast their votes in the 2024 Presidential election Tuesday, but not every single one of them leaned toward Donald Trump of the Republican Party or Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party. At least two New Jersey Devils fans punted their votes via the write-in process. According to multiple reports, superstar center Jack Hughes received one vote, as did breakout checking forward Paul Cotter, in Bergen County, N.J. They joined the likes of Hilary Clinton, Alice Cooper, Jalen Hurts, Bugs Bunny and Jesus Christ in the write-in category for Bergen County. The full list of write-in vote getters can be found here.

If you want to spin the news positively: think of it as a tip of the cap toward the Devils, who, after missing the playoffs in 2023-24 in a season marred by freak injuries and terrible goaltending, look more like contenders early this season, going 8-5-2. Hughes has quietly fallen short of expectations, picking up just four goals and 12 points through 15 games. Cotter was acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights along with a 2025 third-rounder in exchange for forward Alexander Holtz and goaltender Akira Schmid in June, and Cotter has been a revelation so far this season relative to expectations. After scoring seven goals in 76 games last season, he’s already buried six through 15 games, though he’s been buoyed by a shooting percentage north of 27 percent.

Trump, the first former President to be charged with state or federal crimes and now the first convicted felon elected President, defeated Harris this week to win a second term in office after serving from 2016 to 2020.
