The terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.
After a solid start to his junior career, the Devils took Squires in the fourth round, 122nd overall, of the 2023 NHL Draft. The Charlottetown, P.E.I. native has exceptional vision on the ice, using deception and agility to open up space and create high-quality scoring chances.
Squires has been with the Cape Breton Eagles of the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League over the past three seasons, the team that took him in the second round of the 2021 QMJHL Entry Draft. His game has steadily improved alongside the rest of his team. After scoring 64 points in 67 games during his draft year, the 19-year-old notched a career-high 33 goals and 39 assists in 66 games, leading the Eagles in scoring. His 72 points placed him sixth in the entire QMJHL, while his plus/minus of +15 ranked him tied for third among skaters. Squires also led the Eagles with 53 penalty minutes.
Cape Breton made it as far as the semifinals before being eliminated by the eventual runners-up, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
Over 197 games in the ‘Q’, Squires has registered 79 goals and 91 assists, including 26 points in 18 playoff games. He was named the 2022-23 Humanitarian of the Year.
Prior to his work at the junior level, Squires bounced around the minor hockey ranks. From playing for his hometown team, the Charlottetown Islanders, at the 2015 Quebec PeeWee Tournament, to playing for the prestigious Bishop Kearney Selects program, he has shown where he has gone that he can be an effective player with whomever he is teamed up with.
