Oilers add three coaches, Paul Coffey moves to advisory role

The Edmonton Oilers announced Monday they added three new coaches to their staff, with Paul McFarland joining as an assistant, Peter Aubry taking over for the goalies and Conor Allen as their new skills coach.

The Oilers also announced that assistant coach Paul Coffey would return to his role as special advisory to ownership and hockey operations.
The first to report on McFarland joining the Oilers was Daily Faceoff’s The Sheet host Jeff Marek.
Sounds like Paul McFarland will be named assistant coach of the Edmonton Oilers.
McFarland had been coaching the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL.

In 2024-25, McFarland coached the WHL’s Calgary Hitman, leading them to a 45-17-3-3 record and 96 points, third in the Eastern Conference. After sweeping the Saskatoon Blades in the first round, they were eliminated in seven games by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in round two.
Before then, McFarland spent six seasons in the NHL as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Seattle Kraken.
Aubry joins the Oilers after spending two seasons as an associate coach with the NCAA’s University of Nebraska-Omaha. The Windsor, Ont., native spent eight seasons as the Chicago Blackhawks’ developmental goalie coach, as well as the goalie coach for their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.
As for Allen, he spent 2024-25 with the U.S. National Under-17 Development Team, as well as working in a skill development role with the Sioux City Musketeers.
The Oilers went 48-29-5 with 101 points, finishing third in the Pacific Division. After eliminating the Los Angeles Kings, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they were defeated by the Panthers in six games to lose their second consecutive Stanley Cup Final.
