Oilers’ Mattias Janmark out ‘long term’ with injury

Some unwelcome news for a team trying to stay near the top of the Pacific Division.
When speaking to the media on Thursday, Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch revealed that forward Mattias Janmark is going to be out “long term.”
Mattias Janmark out “long term” according to Kris Knoblauch. “It’s a chronic injury that needs some rest.”
“It’s a chronic injury that needs some rest,” Knoblauch said.
Knoblauch didn’t exactly reveal what is ailing Janmark. The 33-year-old was in the lineup on Wednesday night for Edmonton’s first game back from the Olympic break. In a disappointing 6-5 loss to the Anaheim Ducks, Janmark registered just 2:30 of ice time, with his last shift coming late in the first period.
It’s not clear if Janmark’s current ailment is in any connection to the injury he suffered during the preseason. He missed the first month of the season with an undisclosed injury, not making his 2025-26 debut until Nov. 10.
In 43 games, the Danderyd, Sweden native has scored a goal and seven assists for eight points. He has a plus/minus of -8 while registering just under 12 minutes of ice time per game.
Janmark is in his fourth season with the Oilers. He has been a solid veteran presence on the back end since arriving, helping the team reach back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, though the team has lost both times to the Florida Panthers.
Janmark is in the second season of a three-year contract that he signed with the club in July 2024. The deal carries an AAV of $1.45 million. In 680 career regular-season games, he has potted 83 goals and 138 assists for 221 points, with another 37 points in 113 postseason contests.
The Oilers (28-23-8) are playing the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night. Edmonton entered the day third in the Pacific, six points back of the Vegas Golden Knights for first.
