A rising star is making northern Alberta his home for a few more years.

The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed defenseman Evan Bouchard to a four-year contract extension. The deal will carry an AAV of $10.5 million through 2028-29, making him an unrestricted free agent by the end of the contract.

Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects was the first to report the signing.

Bouchard’s new deal was a heavy talking point heading into the offseason for the Oilers. The right-handed blueliner with the booming shot was set to become a restricted free agent. He was coming to the end of his two-year bridge deal, which had a cap hit of $3.9 million.

The 25-year-old is coming off another productive season. In 82 games during the 2024-25 regular season, he scored 14 goals and 53 assists for 67 points. It was a little down from his career year in 2023-24, which saw Bouchard post 82 points in 81 games, with a plus/minus of +34, leading to him finishing fifth in Norris Trophy voting.

Bouchard has been a key contributor in the Oilers’ back-to-back runs to the Stanley Cup Final. He registered 32 points in 25 games during the 2024 postseason, following that up with another 23 points in 22 games this past spring. Unfortunately, it didn’t help Edmonton achieve its ultimate goal, as the team fell to the Florida Panthers in the championship series both times.

Across six NHL seasons, the Oakville, Ontario native has appeared in 347 games with the Oilers, scoring 55 goals and 183 assists for 238 points and a career rating of +57. He’s also notched 81 pints in 75 postseason games.

With Bouchard signing a big-ticket deal, the Oilers now have a little more than $3.6 million in projected cap space for the 2025-26 season, according to CapWages.
