The Edmonton Oilers are nearing an eight-year contract extension with pending unrestricted free agent forward Trent Frederic, reports Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.

Seravalli adds that Frederic’s new contract is expected to be worth north of $3.5 million per season, but less than a $4-million average annual value. Per PuckPedia, Frederic is in the final year of a two-year agreement that carries a $2.3-million average annual value.

Frederic was acquired from the Boston Bruins ahead of the March trade deadline in exchange for defenseman Max Wanner plus a second-round selection in the upcoming NHL Draft and a fourth rounder in 2026. A three-team trade, the deal also saw the Oilers add forward Max Jones from the Bruins while sending left winger Shane Lachance to the New Jersey Devils in order to accomodate the move from a salary cap perspective. The Oilers also acquired right winger Petr Hauser from the Devils.

For Frederic, the 27-year-old St. Louis, Mo., native was limited to a lone regular-season appearance with the Oilers due to a lower-body ailment. Frederic then returned for the Stanley Cup Playoffs where through 22 outings he collected one goal and three assists for four points coupled with a plus-one rating and 25 penalty minutes while averaging more than 11 minutes of time on ice per game.

Originally chosen 29th overall by the Bruins in the 2016 NHL Draft, Frederic has seen 338 career contests in which he has registered 55 goals and 54 assists for 109 points. In 2023-24, Frederic finished with a career high of 40 points counting 18 goals and 22 assists coming in 82 games. Frederic has also added four goals and five assists for nine points through 44 postseason appearances.

Beyond Frederic, the Oilers have a number of other pending unrestricted free agents, a group which includes fellow forwards Corey Perry, Jeff Skinner, Connor Brown, and Kasperi Kapanen, among others, according to PuckPedia.
