Calgary Flames head coach Darryl Sutter has been named the recipient of the Jack Adams Award as the National Hockey League’s top coach in the 2021–22 season.

Sutter led the Flames to a 50–21–11 record during the 2021–22 regular season, his first full campaign after replacing Geoff Ward behind the Calgary bench on March 5, 2021.

The 63-year-old from Viking, AB has served as the head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, and Flames after wrapping up his playing career with Chicago in 1987.

Despite winning two Stanley Cups with the Kings, Sutter had never won the Jack Adams Award prior to this season.

The NHL Broadcasters Association votes on the Jack Adams Award at the end of each regular season. Gerard Gallant (New York Rangers) and Andrew Brunette (Florida Panthers) were also nominated.

Sutter received 54 of 121 first-place votes for the award and appeared on 76.9% of the ballots (93 of 121). Brunette and Gallant respectively finished second and third in voting, with Dean Evason (Minnesota Wild) and Jared Bednar (Colorado Avalanche) rounding out the top five.

Darryl is the second member of the illustrious Sutter family to win the Jack Adams Award. Brian, his older brother, received the award as head coach of the St. Louis Blues in 1990–91.

Brian was on hand to present the 2022 award to Darryl on Thursday evening.
