The 28-year-old Bennett was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but the speech that’s now made the rounds on social media indicates he will stay with the Panthers, the team he joined midway through the 2020-21 season in a trade with the Calgary Flames.
For those who may not get the reference, Bennett was quoting the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, where Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, was originally going to leave his brokerage firm and negotiate a deal with the FBI to keep him out of prison. However, Belfort decides midway through the speech that he doesn’t want to step down, leading to him yelling “I’m not f–king leaving!”
Bennett, who won the 2025 Conn Smythe Trophy, is coming off a playoff run for the ages, leading the league with 15 goals, including five in the Stanley Cup Final. He finished the postseason with another seven assists for 22 points and 48 penalty minutes.
Bennett has been a major playoff contributor in the last three seasons, scoring a combined 27 goals and 24 assists for 51 points in 62 games.
Bennett scored 25 goals and 26 assists for 51 points during the regular season, hitting the 20-goal mark for the third time in his career.
The Panthers won the Stanley Cup for the second consecutive season, doing so on home ice in Game 6 with a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Florida was led by forward Sam Reinhart, who scored four goals in Game 6.
The Panthers have made three consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances, first doing so in 2023, losing to the Vegas Golden Knights.
