If the name Mueller sounds familiar, you’re not alone. The Bloomington, Minnesota native was taken in the first round, eighth overall, of the 2006 NHL Draft by the then-Phoenix Coyotes.
Mueller burst onto the scene during the 2007-08 season, scoring 22 goals and 32 assists for 54 points, finishing fifth in Calder Trophy voting. Unfortunately, that was the young winger’s peak. After a couple of topsy-turvy seasons, the Everett Silvertip star was traded to the Colorado Avalanche during the 2009-10 season.
Mueller missed the entire 2010-11 season after he suffered a concussion at the end of the previous year, as well as another concussion in the last week before training camp. He would eventually return to the ice in January 2012, playing just 32 games that year. His last bit of NHL experience came during the lockout-shortened 2013 season, when he scored 17 points with the Florida Panthers.
Across five NHL seasons, Mueller never appeared in a Stanley Cup Playoff game. In 297 NHL games, he scored 63 goals and 97 assists for 160 points.
After that, Mueller started to journey around Europe. Along with playing for the Kloten Flyers of the Swiss National League, he also played for the Malmö Redhawks of the Swedish Hockey League, as well as EC Red Bull Salzburg of the EBEL in Austria.
In the middle of that, Mueller returned to North America in 2016-17, playing for the Providence Bruins, the Boston Bruins’ American Hockey League affiliate.
Mueller then etched a home in Czechia the following season, becoming a top scorer in the Czech Extraliga for HC Kometa Brno, posting a career-high 64 points during the 2020-21 season, leading the league in scoring. After four seasons with Brno, parts of two years with HC Vítkovice and part of the 2023-24 season in the DEL with Grizzlys Wolfsburg, Mueller capped his career off in style, winning the Czech Extraliga championship with Kometa this past season, scoring the game-winning goal in the process.
Among his accolades, which include being the Czech league’s leading foreign scorer three times, Mueller also led the Swiss National League in goals during the 2013-14 season. He also won the bronze medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship and the gold medal at the 2005 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship.
