Former NHLer Noah Philp announces retirement

Former NHL forward Noah Philp has officially retired from professional hockey, according to an announcement from the Swedish Hockey League club HV71, where he had signed to play the upcoming season.

“I really want to apologize to HV71 and all involved regarding the timing of my decision, but I have decided to stop playing hockey,” Philp said in a statement released by the team. “My motivation for hockey is not fully there, and I’d rather be completely honest than not be fully invested in playing.”

Philp, a 27-year-old native of Alberta, split the 2025-26 campaign between the Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanes organizations.

The Hurricanes claimed Philp off waivers from the Oilers after he appeared in 15 NHL games with Edmonton, where he posted three points on two goals and one assist before the transaction.

After getting claimed by Carolina, Philp primarily provided depth to the team’s AHL affiliate Chicago Wolves. The six-foot-three forward tallied 17 points in 29 regular season games with the Wolves before proving to be an instrumental part of Chicago’s run to the Calder Cup Final, as he notched 14 points in 21 postseason appearances.

Philp appeared in two regular season games for the Hurricanes, who ultimately went on to capture their first Stanley Cup championship since 2006.

Signed as an undrafted free agent by Edmonton out of the University of Alberta, Philp became a mainstay for the club’s AHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors in 2022-23, when he put up 37 points in 70 games before missing the entirety of the 2023-24 campaign.

Prior to his time in university, Philp played in the WHL for the Kootenay Ice and Seattle Thunderbirds, spending two seasons with each team.

In total, Philp wraps up his NHL career with two goals and three assists for five points in 32 games played.
