Former OHL player charged due to golf club attack

Former OHL player Joel Sandie has been charged by the Sault Ste. Marie police in relation to an alleged golf club attack that took place on September 2.

As reported by SooToday’s James Hopkin, it was revealed through court documents that Sandie was involved in the attack and was criminally charged with one count of assault with a weapon due to his actions at the Sault Ste. Marie Golf Club.

The charge was officially laid on September 18, and Sandie must make his first court appearance on November 20. None of the allegations have been tested in court as of yet.

The court has also ordered Sandie to have no communications whatsoever with the other two individuals involved in the attack.

The video clip that went viral in early September was initially posted on Facebook. Ziregolf, a very popular golfing Instagram page, then posted the video as well, where it received 3.6 million views and more than 5,500 comments.

In the video, Sandie is seen chasing another golfer with his golf club while yelling, “I’ll  f—ing kill you!.” Sandie then proceeded to swing his golf club at the other individual standing by a golf cart and then struck his left arm with the club.

Sandie had a short-lived hockey career playing three seasons in the OHL from 1990 to 1993. Over that span, he suited up for a total of four teams, the Kingston Frontenacs, Cornwall Royals, Sudbury Wolves, and London Knights. The defenseman accumulated 153 penalty minutes in 115 OHL games, scoring only one goal and registering 10 assists.

Sandie pursued a career in real estate after hockey, becoming a real estate agent in 1999. He is currently listed as a sales representative for RE/MAX Advantage Realty Ltd.
