Goaltenders will be a hot talking point on Day 1 of NHL Draft

While everyone is looking at which future stars will be taken in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft, there might be a chance that a couple of netminders might hear their names called on Friday night.
There are several talented young goaltenders heading into this year’s draft. The best netminder available is Joshua Ravensbergen of the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League. Though he catches with the wrong hand, his size and athleticism make him a tough guy to pass up.
While there are other good backstops like Jack Ivankovic and Michael Pradel, Russian goaltenders Semyon Frolov and Pyotr Andreyanov, out of the MHL, the top junior league in Russia, have been getting a lot of attention lately.
On Friday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Steven Ellis joined Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk to discuss what type of action we could see on Day 1 of the draft.
Frank Seravalli: How many goalies go in the first round?
Steven Ellis: Only one should, but I’m thinking the fact that Frolov and Andreyanov, the two names that have been getting a lot of attention there, I would not be surprised if we get three in the final ten picks of the first round.
Frank: I think this is the perfect year. Like I said off the hop, when we were talking about the draft, my conversations with GMs in the last couple days is, ‘It’s great to have picks, but we don’t necessarily love the board.’ If you don’t love the board, take premium positions. Take guys that are hard to find, and see if you can develop them.
Steven: I’m on the board of draft a goalie every year, no matter what. Even if you only have, like, three picks, take a goalie, because that’s such an important position to have the depth in. This is a good year for goaltending. I don’t think we’re gonna get that next year.
