The Seattle Kraken have agreed to terms with defenseman Gustav Olofsson on a one-year, two-way contract for the remainder of the 2025-26 season, the club announced Monday afternoon.

Olofsson, 31, has two goals and 16 points through 29 games with the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds this season. The Kraken have now effectively upgraded his previous AHL-only contract to a two-way NHL deal.

According to PuckPedia, Olofsson’s new contract carries a $775,000 charge against the NHL’s salary cap while paying him a hefty $460,000 salary in the AHL.

Olofsson is now eligible to play for the Kraken in the rest of the regular season and playoffs, but he will likely remain with the Firebirds for now, as Seattle placed him on waivers in a corresponding move on Monday.

Olofsson has been part of the Kraken organization since its inception in 2021, having signed with the club as a free agent prior to its inaugural 2021-22 season. The 6’3″ left-handed defender has played almost exclusively in the AHL ever since, save for four NHL games with Seattle split between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.

A second-round pick (No. 46 overall) of the Minnesota Wild in the 2013 NHL Draft, Olofsson spent his first post-draft season at Colorado College before turning pro in 2014. The Boras, Sweden product skated in his first two NHL games with the Wild in the 2015-16 season.

Olofsson appeared in a career-high 41 NHL games with the Wild in the 2017-18 season, collecting eight assists, but was traded to the Montreal Canadiens the following October in exchange for prospect Will Bitten. After dressing for just three NHL games over three seasons with the Canadiens, Olofsson joined the Kraken.

Through 63 career NHL games over parts of six seasons with the Wild, Canadiens, and Kraken, Olofsson has recorded 11 points (all assists). If he clears waivers on Tuesday, he’ll remain a member of the Firebirds, who currently rank fifth in the AHL’s Pacific Division.
