UPDATE! Hiller (illness) is a game-time decision; Andersen first off

January 15, 2:13 pm EST – Jonas Hiller is a game-time decision.

As the Anaheim Ducks prepare to take on the Vancouver Canucks tonight at the Honda Center, they released some bad news about starting netminder Jonas Hiller.

Hiller is sick and is listed as a game-time decision tonight. Given that they are facing a divisional opponent, I am sure that head coach Bruce Boudreau wanted his number-1 guy in the cage, but it does not look like that is going to happen. With Hiller ill they have recalled Frederik Andersen from AHL Norfolk.

Andersen was sent down on Friday because the Ducks wanted him to get more playing time, something he was not getting a lot of behind the red-hot Hiller. While not having Hiller, who has won 14-straight starts (no seriously 14 straight, impressive right?) is bad, it could be worse. Andersen has dazzled in his first season as an NHLer and enters play tonight 10-2-0 with a 2.07 GAA and .923 SV% in 11 starts and 12 appearances.

Andersen left the ice first so it does not look like John Gibson will make his NHL debut. Gibson is a 20-year-old whom Anaheim selected 39th overall in 2011. He is 11-9-3 with a 2.61 GAA and .915 SV% in his first full season with Norfolk. If Hiller is ruled out, then Andersen will get the nod.
