How to Bet on the NHL: Part 3 – Advanced Options

Beyond standard bets like moneyline and puckline wagers and basic futures bets like picking who will win the Stanley Cup, there are a handful of advanced betting options and strategies that experienced NHL bettors have at their disposal. Here’s a look at the more advanced side of NHL hockey betting.

NHL Parlay Betting

A parlay is a wager in which a bettor can combine two or more selections into a single bet, with the stipulation being that every selection within the parlay must win for the parlay to be graded a winner. The added risk of requiring every selection to be a winner is rewarded by large payouts when the parlay does hit.

For example, say the Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers are all going off at -110. A bettor that risks $33 to win $30 on each of these teams will profit $90 if all three teams win. However, had he bet a $100 parlay on these three teams, it would have paid 6-to-1 for a $600 profit.

On the other hand, those selections going 2-1 would net this bettor a $27 profit in the $33 each scenario and would lose the whole $100 on a parlay. The risk and reward both rise with the number of games and totals added to your parlay.

NHL Game Props

On the day of the game, many sportsbooks offer individual game prop bets. These include lines on individual periods (such as which team will win the first period on the moneyline or with a 0.5-goal puckline), which team will score the game’s first goal, and three-way lines for betting on a team to win in regulation or for the game to go into overtime.

These types of NHL prop bets can be great for both casual and advanced bettors alike. A bettor that simply wants to get more action on their preferred team or total can do so, while crafty bettors that have honed in on specific team tendencies like fast starts or strong second periods can turn their observations into profits.

NHL Live Betting

Are you the type of person that can feel a comeback coming before it happens, or one that can tell five minutes into the first period that a team is off its game? Live betting could be for you.

With Live Betting, a bettor can wager on in-game action such as adjusted moneylines, pucklines and totals based on how the action has unfolded in the game thus far. This is a valuable tool for intuitive bettors.

Betting Trends & Tools

Regardless of what handicapping strategy you choose to employ, the more useful information you have at your disposal, the better. Standard sports websites like ESPN are great for box scores and player statistics, but they are extremely limited when it comes to betting information.

OddsShark.com is a great companion for sports bettors. Features like game logs, game matchup reports, and the OddsShark NHL Database can help you research betting trends, past lines and results, and other useful information to take your handicapping to the next level.
