The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Monday that goaltender Frederik Andersen is dealing with a blood clotting issue and there is no timetable for his return.

“During recent medical testing, it was discovered that Frederik Andersen had a blood clotting issue that needed to be addressed,” Hurricanes’ President and General Manager Don Waddell said in a statement. “There is currently no timetable for his return, but we are confident that Freddie will be able to make a full recovery.”

Andersen signed a two-year extension with the Hurricanes on July 1 and has posted a 4-1-0 record with an .894 save percentage in six appearances in 2023-24. He last played in Carolina’s 2-1 loss to the New York Rangers on Nov. 2, stopping 24 of 26 shots.

The Hurricanes announced on Monday that the club invited 38-year-old Jaroslav Halak to join the team on a free agent tryout while they figured out what Andersen’s medical issue was. The announcement indicated that whatever was ailing Andersen would keep him out for a significant period of time.

The franchise solidified their net in the offseason, signing Andersen to a two-year extension worth $6.8 million on July 1. That same day, the Hurricanes signed Antti Raanta to a one-year, $1.5 million extension.

In three seasons with the Hurricanes, Andersen has a 60-26-4 record in 92 appearances with a .914 save percentage and a goals-against-average (GAA) of 2.32. Through his career, he has a 286-126-52 record with a .915 save percentage and a 2.59 GAA.

As for Halak, he posted a 10-9-5 record in 2022-23 with the Rangers. The 2003 ninth-round pick has a 295-189-69 record with a .915 save percentage and 2.50 GAA.

In three seasons with the Hurricanes, Raanta 37-9-7 record with a .908 save percentage and a 2.39 GAA. In 11 NHL seasons, he has a record of 130-74-27 with a .917 save percentage and 2.44 GAA.
