Hurricanes claim Noah Philp off waivers from Oilers

The Carolina Hurricanes have claimed center Noah Philp off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers.
Philp had played in 15 games with the Oilers in 2025-26, scoring two goals and an assist with an average ice time of 10:02. The 27-year-old had not played since Nov. 17, initially ruled out with an upper-body injury, before being placed on the Long Term Injured Reserve.
The Oilers placed him on waivers on Sunday, alongside fellow forward David Tomasek.
Before his injury, Philp had played spot minutes on the fourth line and scored his first NHL goal in an October game against the Vancouver Canucks.
He is currently on a one-year, $775,000 contract after playing 15 games with the Oilers in 2024-25, posting two assists.
Philp returned to professional hockey last season after taking a hiatus from the game in 2023-24, noting a “gut feeling” and that he “needed to step away,” at the time, after he had scored 19 goals and 18 assists in 70 games as an AHL rookie with the Bakersfield Condors.
Prior to his time in professional hockey, the Canmore, Alberta, native was a standout with the University of Alberta Golden Bears, leading them to the Canada West conference title in 2020 and to the 2022 U SPORTS final, where they fell to the University of Québec au Trois-Rivieres.
He now joins a Carolina Hurricanes team sitting atop the Metropolitan Division, with hopes of a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, he is likely to be assigned to the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, who sit second in the league’s Central Division.
Should he play in Chicago, he would play under interim head coach Spiros Anastas, who previously coached the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in U SPORTS Canada West for four seasons, before Philp’s arrival with Alberta.
