One of the on-ice leaders in the NHL is being honored for his work off the ice.

On Tuesday, the league announced that New York Islanders captain Anders Lee is the 2024 winner of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

Lee has been nominated for the King Clancy in six of the last seven seasons.

The trophy is an award given to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice, as well as making a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.

With the win, Lee will receive a $25,000 donation to benefit the charity or charities of his choosing.

One of the charities that the 33-year-old works with is the Jam Kancer in the Kan Foundation. The group hosts events to help raise money in the fight against cancer. Lee donated $30,000 at the 2023 Jam Kancer in the Kan tournament, which helped raise over $155,000.

Lee is the third player from the Islanders to have won the award. Bryan Trottier became the second player to win the King Clancy in 1989, while Doug Weight earned the honor in 2011.

On the ice, Lee scored 20 goals and 37 points in 81 regular-season games, scoring a goal and three assists in the Islanders’ five-game loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round. In 759 career games, the Edina, Minnesota native has scored 260 goals and 453 points, including 21 points in 46 playoff games.

The next award to be announced is the Lady Byng Trophy. Either Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews, Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Petterson or Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin’s name will be called on Thursday.
