Hurricanes’ Slavin becomes second American to win Stanley Cup and Olympic gold in same season

Jaccob Slavin has added his name to an extremely short list of USA Hockey royalty.

The Carolina Hurricanes’ defenseman lifted the Stanley Cup after this defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 Sunday night, winning the Stanley Cup Final in six games.

With the win, Slavin became just the second U.S.-based player to win the Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal in the same season. The other was Ken Morrow, who won gold with the 1980 U.S. Miracle on Ice, then won a Stanley Cup with the New York Islanders that spring. He would go on to win four Stanley Cup championships with the Islanders.

The only other players to accomplish the feat are Canadian NHLers: Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan did so in 2002; Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook did in 2010, then Drew Doughty and Jeff Carter won both in 2014.

Slavin finished the playoffs with four assists while averaging around 23 minutes of ice time. In 2025-26, he had one goal and seven assists for eight points, averaging 21:19 of ice time in 39 regular-season games.

Now in 11 NHL seasons, the Denver, Colo., native has 56 goals and 251 assists for 307 points in 784 career regular-season games, all with the Hurricanes. He also has nine goals and 35 assists for 44 points in 105 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
