Jack Campbell announces retirement from hockey
Soupy is calling it a career.
On Sunday, free agent goaltender Jack Campbell announced via Instagram that he is retiring from professional hockey.
In his announcement, Campbell revealed that he will be moving into a coaching position for Novus Global, a firm that specializes in training and coaching for executives, athletes, and other professionals.
Campbell, 34, did not play any professional hockey last season. He last played in the 2024-25 season for the Detroit Red Wings‘ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins, where he went 5-7-1 with a .893 save percentage and a 2.91 goals-against average in 14 appearances.
The Port Huron, Michigan native was the 11th overall pick by the Dallas Stars in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He remains the highest drafted goaltender in Dallas’ franchise history.
After a two-year junior career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Campbell joined the AHL’s Texas Stars at the tail end of the 2011-12 season. He would spend the next four full seasons in the Stars organization, but only managed to get in one NHL game during the 2013-14 season, in which he gave up six goals on 47 shots.
In June of 2016, Campbell was traded to the Los Angeles Kings for defenseman Nick Ebert. With the Kings, he was able to find his footing in the NHL, going 20-24-5 with a .918 SV% and a 2.51 GAA in 49 starts over three-plus seasons.
In February of the 2019-20 season, Campbell was dealt along with forward Kyle Clifford to the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward Trevor Moore and two draft picks. He went on to play his best hockey in Toronto, especially the 2021-22 season that saw him make the All-Star Game and put up a 31-9-6 record with a .914 SV% and a 2.64 GAA in 47 starts.
Campbell capitalized off his success with Toronto by signing a five-year, $25 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers in July of 2022. He disappointed with Edmonton, however, quickly losing the starting job to Stuart Skinner and eventually getting bought out in June of 2024.
