It looks like the Edmonton Oilers have found their starting goaltender.

According to Kevin Weekes, the Oilers are Jack Campbell are closing in on a five-year contract worth $5 million annually…

Campbell was drafted by the Dallas Stars with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft but he didn’t hit his stride as an NHL goaltender until 2018-19 when he was with the Los Angeles Kings. Campbell posted a .928 save percentage over 31 games with the Kings that season.

The following season, Campbell was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs who were in need of a quality backup to split the net with a struggling Frederik Andersen. Campbell took over Toronto’s net in 2021 as Andersen navigated through an injury-riddled season and put up a .921 save percentage in 21 games.

Campbell played his first season as a team’s starting goaltender in 2021-22 and he posted a .914 save percentage for the Leafs across 49 games. All told, the 30-year-old has a .916 save percentage in 135 games in the NHL.

After rolling with a tandem of Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen for three consecutive seasons, the Oilers are making a big splash in free agency with the hope of shoring up their goaltending once and for all.

Koskinen left the NHL earlier this offseason to ink a deal with Lugano in Switzerland while Smith appears likely to spend the 2022-23 season on the Long-Term Injured Reserve. Campbell’s backup in Edmonton figures to be Stuart Skinner, who had an impressive showing as a rookie in 2021-22.

Campbell is the latest member of the Leafs to travel west to join the Oilers. Tyson Barrie signed with the Oilers ahead of the 2021 season and Zach Hyman and Cody Ceci inked deals in Edmonton last summer.

Free agency will officially open on Wednesday at noon ET.
