The Montreal Canadiens continue to lock up their core, as they’ve signed goaltender Jakub Dobes to a three-year contract extension with a $5,357,575 cap hit.

Insider Frank Seravalli was the first to report the signing.

Dobes was in the final year of a two-year contract with a $965,000 cap hit, and was set to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights at the end of the 2026-27 season. He was eligible for an extension on Wednesday.

At this point in time, there are no reported clauses or bonuses with the contract, and the salary structure appears to be a consistent $5,357,575 salary across all three seasons. The final two years of the contract are also UFA years.

Dobes will now take up 4.72% of the Canadiens’ salary cap in 2027-28, and has him locked until 2029-30 when he’ll be 29. His closest contract comparable is Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Spencer Knight, who begins his three-year contract at a $5,833,333 cap hit this season.

Dobes is coming off of a roller coaster of a regular season, as he started the seasons slow before finding his game in the second half of the season and securing the starting role for the Canadiens with a 29-10-4 record, .901 save percentage and 22.94 5v5 goals saved above expected in 43 games. While his SV% reflects the ups and downs of his season and was a step back from his rookie season, a lot of that was also due to the poor defensive structure in front of him, as he was sixth in the league in 5v5 GSAx.

Dobes true breakout was in the 2026 playoffs, where he backstopped the Canadiens to the Eastern Conference Final with a 9-6-4 record, a .908 SV%, and a playoff-leading 11.9 5v5 GSAx in 19 games.

The Canadiens have had a very quiet summer, as most of their notable moves have been about extending their core, including Dobes and Ivan Demidov, along with trading Brendan Gallagher. They still have $14,233,924 in cap space according to PuckPedia, and have eight RFAs left to re-sign, highlighted by Kirby Dach, Zack Bolduc and Arber Xhekaj.
