The Boston Bruins have signed forward James van Riemsdyk to a one-year, $1 million contract.

JVR is coming off of a difficult season with the Flyers, scoring 12 goals and 29 points. He had 24 goals and 38 points the year before and is an eight-time 40-plus-point scorer in his career. He had a career-high 30 goals and 61 points with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2013-14.

van Riemsdyk has 300 goals and 591 points in his career, split between two spells in Philadelphia and a six-year run with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He also skated in three world juniors with the United States, hitting double digits in 2008 and 2009.

van Riemsdyk, 34, was drafted second overall by the Flyers back in 2007. With going to Boston, he has a chance to play on a team that’s looking to contend again, with or without David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron.

As a cheap depth-scoring option, the Bruins could be are getting one of the best value signings so far. Boston has $12.604 million in cap space, with new deals needed for RFA’s Trent Frederic and Ian Mitchell. The team has eight NHL forwards, six defensemen and goaltender Linus Ullmark under contract, with Jeremy Swayman also needing a new RFA deal.
