How hot is Jared Bednar’s seat with Avalanche?

As we prepare for the 2026-27 NHL season, eyes will be on the Colorado Avalanche as they try to bounce back after a campaign that saw them win the Presidents’ Trophy, but were swept in the third round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Vegas Golden Knights.

Jared Bednar is entering his 11th season as Avalanche head coach. While he’s recorded four 50-win seasons as the Avs’ bench boss, they have hoisted the Stanley Cup just once, back in 2022. With one year left on his contract, some are wondering if Bednar could be on the hot seat as Colorado heads into a new season.

On the Sept. 2 episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton are joined by Jesse Montano of Guerilla Sports to discuss the Avalanche’s offseason and their outlook going into 2026-27, as well as what fans should expect when it comes to Bednar’s future.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Coaches don’t have any sort of protection they get their money, but they can be fired at any point. One of the videos I’m doing in our “Countdown to Hockey” series is coaches who could find themselves in the “hot seat” early in the season.

Should I include Jared Bednar in that? Or is he good for the year?

Jesse Montano: I mean, he doesn’t have a contract past this season. He’s in the final year of his deal. Look … the players really like Jared Bednar, they still respond to him every day. The organization thinks really highly of Bednar. I mean, you could go through this roster and make the argument that this roster is built around Bednar’s philopsophy and the types of guys he likes. They have a lot tied to him with this organization.

That being said … they have come up short, and it’s not just that they’ve come up short, but in dramatic, crash-and-burn fashion, the last couple of years. It’s been dramatic. If they get off to a super-slow start, could you feel the heat on Bednar’s seat start to warm up? Yeah, I think so.
