Jaromir Jagr says 2024-25 hockey season will be his last

One of the longest and most storied careers in might be coming to an end.

In an exclusive interview with CNN Prima News, Jaromir Jagr revealed that the 2024-25 season will be his last in professional hockey.

The 52-year-old is coming off another season where Rytíři Kladno, the team Jagr owns, narrowly escaped relegation from the Czech Extraliga for the third straight year, beating second-tier Vsetin in a best-of-seven series. Jagr scored a goal and an assist in the second game of the series, which made him the oldest player to score a goal in professional hockey, surpassing the legend Gordie Howe.

In the interview, Jagr stated that he has plans to document the season on film, with Petr Větrovský. Jagr admitted the two started working together four years ago to follow the end of his career, but says the end did not come as planned.

“I thought I’d be done by now,” Jagr said.

Jagr also pointed out that he is going to work on getting himself in shape for one last kick at the can.

“I would like to try to prepare physically as best as possible. I always say that I will prepare, then I never do. But I would really like to prepare professionally for the last season.”

Along with a film, Jagr says he plans on finishing a book that he began preparing a decade ago.

The Kladno native played just 15 games during the regular season for his club, as he spent two months in the U.S., as the Pittsburgh Penguins retired his famous no. 68. Jagr has played no more than 30 games in a season since the 2021-22 campaign, when he played 48 games.

Jagr, who sits second all-time in NHL scoring with 1,921 points, has posted 303 points in 357 games in playing professionally in Kladno. Throughout his entire career, that has seen him play in Russia, Germany and Italy, Jagr has scored 2,673 points (including playoffs).
