With the 2025-26 NHL season set to get underway, so too will a formative campaign for young players across the league as they look to establish themselves as NHL regulars and stars.

While the eyes often draw to the forwards putting up big points, the crease could have some interesting young names take the next step as well, and Columbus Blue Jackets netminder, Jet Greaves could be the player to watch.

The 24-year-old made his NHL debut back in the 2022-23 campaign, and has played a total of 21 NHL games since then, with a .924 save percentage and 2.62 goals-against average, but he has yet to establish himself as a regular starter in the league.

As the Blue Jackets look to take the next step this season, it could come with Greaves getting more playing time as well, as he competes with Elvis Merzlikins and Ivan Fedotov for starts.

On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk, Carter Hutton and Steven Ellis dove into Greaves, and some of the top young players to watch in the NHL this season.

Hutton: The guy for me this year is Jet Greaves in Columbus. He’s a smaller goalie. He’s very similar [to Dustin Wolf]. Do you think he can make that jump and really be in the hunt this year to try to help this team?

Ellis: I think so. You look at Greaves and you look at the numbers, last year in the NHL, he played so well, but that was kind of what we expected from him to a point. Because you look at him with the Barrie Colts, you look at him in the AHL, you see he was always putting up really good numbers despite playing on poor teams.

I think you look at the athleticism out there, the way that he’s able to go out there and challenge shooters.Wwhen you’re a smaller goalie, you’ve got to do a couple things different, and one of those things is making sure making sure you’re keeping that glove up at all times you’re taking away the top and the net and I feel like he’s always done that so well.

It’s funny, when I talk to younger goalies and guys in the OHL now about what’s one goalie you like to look at, a lot of people say Jet Greaves and given he hasn’t been a full time NHL, it’s interesting, but because he does so much with his smaller frame, and he does take a lot of that net up, always keeping his shoulders active, he’s moving very quickly, this is a guy I think that should be a starting goalie in the NHL, and given that Elvis Merzlikins, just hasn’t been able to figure it out, I think Greaves is going to make a lot of noise.
