The Winnipeg Jets have elected to sit defensemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn ahead of the team’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The roster decision comes with less than 24 hours until the NHL Trade Deadline at 3:00 PM ET on Friday.

Josh Morrissey, Neil Pionk and Colin Miller are all out with injuries, with Ville Heinola and Isak Phillips drawing in.

Stanley is considered to be one of the most intriguing defensemen on the market this year. The 6-foot-7 defender is in the midst of a career season with nine goals and 21 points. Prior to this season, the 27-year-old had registered just five NHL goals in his previous five seasons. He’s also one penalty minute away from crossing the 100 PIM threshold for the first time in his career.

Stanley is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer after the conclusion of his two-year deal worth $1.25 million per season.

Schenn is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, helping the Tampa Bay Lightning win the title in 2020 and 2021. In more recent times, Schenn has served as a depth defender for the Jets. Having registered a goal and seven points in 46 games this year. The Jets acquired him from Pittsburgh last year, who traded for him from Nashville just days prior.

Selected fifth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2008, Schenn made an impression as a hard-hitting blueliner. He spent four years in Toronto before joining the Philadelphia Flyers, where he spent four years playing alongside his brother, Brayden Schenn. Since then, Schenn has bounced around organizations and even spent some time in the AHL in both 2018-19 and 2019-20.

Schenn hasn’t been an everyday defender in close to a decade while dealing with some injuries on the side. But he has still been a reliable blueliner who can block shots, hit opponents and break plays down. The 36-year-old defenseman has 45 goals and 212 points in 1,118 NHL regular-season games over the past 18 years.

Internationally, Schenn won the 2008 World Juniors and took home silver at the 2009 World Championship with Team Canada.

Schenn is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
