Originally drafted by the Boston Bruins with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 draft, Thornton has now played 23 seasons in the league. He spent his first eight years in Boston, was traded to San Jose in 2006, and signed a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs last fall.
In 44 games with the Leafs in 2021, Thornton scored five goals and 20 points. He also added one goal in seven playoff games with Toronto.
Thornton currently sits 14th in all-time scoring in NHL history with 1,592 points. With three more points, he’ll pass Paul Coffey for 13th, and with five more points, he’ll jump Mark Recchi for 12th.
