Red Wings’ John Gibson leaves game with upper-body injury

The Detroit Red Wings announced on social media that goaltender John Gibson left Thursday night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks with an upper-body injury. He would not return.
Gibson did not take the ice for the third period. However, he did not face any shots in the second frame, as the Red Wings outshot the Canucks 13-0. Gibson had stopped four of five shots in the opening period.
Michal Postava, whom the team called up from their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids one day earlier, stopped seven of eight shots faced in his NHL debut, and the Red Wings defeated the Canucks 5-2.
Gibson, 33, is 2-3-1 with an .871 save percentage (SV%) and 3.35 goals against average (GAA) in seven appearances in 2025-26. Through 13 NHL seasons, the Pittsburgh native has a 235-242-68 record with an .909 SV% and 2.88 GAA in 570 career regular-season games with Detroit and Anaheim Ducks.
He’s also appeared in 26 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, where he’s posted an 11-13 record with a .912 SV% and 2.80 GAA.
Gibson was selected by the Ducks in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Across four AHL seasons, all with the Norfolk Admirals, he went 34-23-8 with a .921 SV% and 2.38 GAA in 70 appearances.
He also spent two seasons playing junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League with the Kitchener Rangers, where he went 38-19-1 with a .928 SV% and 2.60 GAA in 59 career games.
The Red Wings are now 4-3-3 with 11 points through their first 10 games of the season.
