The Detroit Red Wings announced on Monday that goalie John Gibson is unlikely return to the team’s matinee contest against the Nashville Predators with an upper-body injury.

Gibson played the entirety of the first period of the game, turning aside 10 of the 11 shots he faced, surrendering a goal to Filip Forsberg on the power play.

The veteran netminder from Pittsburgh did not return for the second, prompting the announcement from the club.

Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman made a major splash this summer when he sent Petr Mrazek, a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 second-round pick to land Gibson in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks.

Gibson, who spent the entirety of his NHL career prior to this season as a member of the Ducks, has delivered strong results for Detroit this season. After shaking off a slow start, Gibson entered Monday’s game with a 23-12-2 record with a .905 save percentage, 2.57 goals against average and four shutouts.

In his career, Gibson owns a 227-229-65 record with a .910 SV% and 2.87 GAA. He is third among active American goalies in both wins and shutouts behind Jonathan Quick and Connor Hellebuyck.

If Gibson is evaluated and determined to have suffered a longer-term injury, Yzerman could be forced to act again to add a starting-caliber option in net ahead of Friday’s NHL trade deadline.

38-year-old Cam Talbot is the team’s backup, and in his 25 appearances this season, he has posted a .890 SV% and 3.08 GAA.

Another compelling option would be an internal promotion in 2021 first-round pick Sebastian Cossa, who owns a stellar .927 SV% and 1.99 GA in 31 appearances for the team’s AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.

Daily Faceoff prospect analyst Steven Ellis ranked Cossa as the No. 3 prospect in Detroit’s system this past summer.
