The New York Rangers have acquired goaltender Joonas Korpisalo from the Boston Bruins in exchange for forward prospect Kalle Vaisanen and a fourth-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft, the club announced Wednesday afternoon.

Korpisalo, 32, posted a 14-9-6 record and an .894 save percentage in 31 games with the Bruins during the 2025-26 regular season. He also made one brief appearance with Boston in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, stopping all six shots he faced in 13 minutes of playing time. Korpisalo is under contract through the end of the 2027-28 season at a $4 million cap hit.

Vaisanen, 23, skated in 51 games with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack in the 2025-26 season, collecting three goals and four points. The Rangers originally selected the 6’5″ right wing in the fourth round (No. 106 overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft; he has one year remaining on his entry-level contract.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the news of the trade on Wednesday afternoon.

Korpisalo now figures to slot in behind Igor Shesterkin as the Rangers’ backup goaltender moving forward. The Rangers also have Dylan Garand and Spencer Martin as goaltenders with NHL experience in their organization.

A 6’4″, 200-pound goaltender from Pori, Finland, Korpisalo has 334 games of NHL experience under his belt over parts of 11 seasons. A third-round pick (No. 62 overall) of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2012, Korpisalo began his career with the club in the 2015-16 season and spent eight years there, most notably setting a modern NHL record with 85 saves in a 5-OT playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020.

After being dealt to the Los Angeles Kings ahead of the 2023 trade deadline, Korpisalo signed with the Ottawa Senators as a free agent later that year. But he struggled to find consistency in his first and only season in Ottawa, leading the Senators to trade him to Boston as part of the Linus Ullmark deal in the summer of 2024.

Across his 334 career NHL games, Korpisalo has posted a 140-126-38 record, along with eight shutouts and a .900 save percentage. He’s gone 5-9 with two shutouts and a .922 save percentage in 16 playoff contests.
