Jordan Binnington is the best option for Canada in net

While he might be one of the more scrutinized players on Canada’s men’s Olympic roster, goaltender Jordan Binnington continues to prove the doubters wrong.

Binnington’s numbers with the St. Louis Blues heading into the Winter Games might have been inauspicious, but he has managed to turn his game around in the big moments in Milan. Even after a couple of arguably soft goals against France in the team’s final group stage, Binnington bounced back and came up with some big saves in the quarterfinal win against Czechia on Wednesday.

The Stanley Cup champion has shown how he’s been able to ignore the critics on the international stage before, just look at how he played during the 4 Nations Face-Off last February. With Canada pushing for Olympic gold, they’re going ride-or-die with No. 50.

On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton explain why Binnington is Canada’s unanimous No. 1 goaltender.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I will be as bold as to say anyone who’s going to bitch about Binnington or the goaltending going forward – I was one of them going into this tournament – I will eat my words and I will shut up forever. That double save on the Marty Necas breakaway, that save on Simek in overtime…That was Jordan Binnington and his swagger and his cockiness, we can call it, at its fullest. He was excellent and they do not win this game if it’s not for Jordan Binnington. 

Carter Hutton: I think he was great. He was good when the times he needed to be. … He gives his team a chance to win. That’s what you want out of your goalie at this level. It was an impressive win in all matters. I think people are missing the point in the sense of, like, they’re going to deal with a little bit of [adversity]. They haven’t had a bump in the road. It’s been an easy prelim, right? I think we talked about this and being concerning that, like, it was like a tapered-down effect. Then all of a sudden, now you’ve got to crank it up again.
