Junior hockey can be a roller coaster.

The GOHL’s Cambridge Redhawks were the best team in the regular season this year, going 45-5-0. If you combine their wins from the previous two seasons, they had just 48. It can take years for a winning team to put things together.

And this year, the Sarnia Legionnaires learned that the hard way. With an 8-2 loss to the Elmira Sugar Kings on Sunday, the Legionnaires finished the season with a record of 0-50 to become the first team in league history to fail to win a single game.

In all, the Legionnaires scored just 83 goals (1.66 goals per game) while allowing 341 for a goal differential of -258. The Caledon Bombers weren’t much better with a 5-45-0 record and a -210 goal differential – but at least they won games.

By all accounts, this was by design. Of the 25 players on their roster, 22 can return in 2026-27 – that’s basically unheard of. And while you might think a team might not elect to bring back so many players from a literal point-less campaign. But with a whopping 10 17-year-olds on the squad, this is about as young a roster as you’ll find in any junior league.

The GOHL is an official affiliate of the Ontario Hockey League, serving as a stepping stone for the top junior league in the country. Sarvir Jaworski, for example, was a second-round pick by Sarnia last year, and even skated in 11 games with the club this season. It’s been a tough road for Sarnia in recent years. The team last won a playoff series in 2014-15, but did win the Sutherland Cup as Ontario Jr. B champions multiple times.

Notable alumni include Dino Ciccarelli, Matt Martin and Frank Beaton, who, if you didn’t know, was traded to the Minnesota North Stars by the New York Islanders in 1982 for a steak dinner.

No team in Jr. B history has ever failed to register a point. The former Ohsweken Golden Eagles had a 0-47-1 record in the Midwestern Junior B Hockey League in 1997-98 before folding. But they at least tied a game, meaning they actually snagged a point.

Many who follow the team believe that once the young core matures and continues to develop properly, the Legionnaires will become a threat again. The good news? It can’t get any worse.
