On Monday, the Colorado Avalanche announced that the club has signed defensemen Calvin de Haan and Jacob MacDonald and forward Joel Kiviranta to new contracts.

de Haan’s contract will be one year with an $800,000 cap hit, while Kiviranta signed for one year at the League minimum of $775,000. MacDonald signed a two-year contract with a $775,000 average annual value.

de Haan is an NHL veteran with 632 career games on his resume. The 33-year-old has 141 points (24 goals, 117 assists) and a minus-2 rating over 12 seasons with the New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning.

In 2023-24, the Ontario native recorded 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 59 games with the Lightning. He did not tally a point in one Stanley Cup Playoff game. He was originally drafted by the Islanders in the first round (No. 12) of the 2009 NHL Draft.

Kiviranta is an interesting story in Colorado.

Known best for his hat trick for the Dallas Stars against the Avs in Game 7 of the 2020 playoffs (his first playoff game), the 28-year-old has 37 points (19 goals, 18 assists) in 219 career NHL games. After being signed as an undrafted free agent by Dallas, Kiviranta spent his first four seasons with the Stars from 2019 to 2023. The Finland native was struggling to produce offensively and when he did not receive an offer from Dallas, signed as a free agent with Colorado ahead of last season. He tallied nine points (three goals, six assists) in 56 games in 2023-24 and added a goal and an assist in eight playoff games.

MacDonald has spent most of his career on the edge between an NHLer and an American Hockey League blue liner.  The 31-year-old has 135 NHL games under his belt, posting 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in five seasons with the Florida Panthers, Avalanche and San Jose Sharks. MacDonald recorded nine points (seven goals, two assists) in a career-high 34 games last season. He was originally undrafted, signing with Florida as a free agent in 2018.
