One of the top prospects for the 2027 NHL Draft is hitting the books in the Mitten next fall.

It was reported on Wednesday that former Everett Silvertips defenseman Landon DuPont will be joining the University of Michigan next season. Probably one of the most offensively gifted blueliners in the junior ranks, the Calgary native helped the Silvertips win the Western Hockey League’s Ed Chynoweth Cup for the first time in franchise history, and made it all the way to the Memorial Cup championship game.

He’ll be joining a team laden with NHL propsects, including Michael Hage (Montreal Canadiens), Will Horcoff (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Jack Ivankovic (Nashville Predators). Playing for the Wolverines might be the perfect spot for Dupont to establish himself as the No. 1 prospect of the 2027 draft class.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Steven Ellis joined Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton to explain whether DuPont joining the Wolverines is the right call.

Steven Ellis: Landon DuPont is definitely one of the most skilled defensemen you’re going to find. There’d be a very good chance he could go first overall if he was in this year’s draft. That’s the thing, he’s a very talented player. He got exceptional status to the WHL, a huge reason why Everett won the WHL championship, and ended up going to the Memorial Cup.

As a guy who lives in the Ontario area, seeing a player that’s a drivable distance for me, thumbs up. Can’t complain about that, but I actually think that’s a good fit, because we know Michigan’s going to be a top contender. They’re getting guys like Michael Hage back. It’s a team that should be one of the top teams going for the national title, and he’ll have the opportunity to be the No. 1 D, the No. 1 power play quarterback. I think that’s a really good fix. He could have gone to a lot of different schools – Denver, Michigan State – but he would have had to fight for his ice time with some other quality defensemen. Michigan, I feel like he’s going to be a very key part. So, I think it’s a great fit.
